The Deer Park United congregation began in 1881 as the Deer Park Presbyterian Mission. In 1925, the majority of this congregation voted to join The United Church of Canada. The members who voted to remain Presbyterian formed Calvin Presbyterian Church.
Over the years, the two congregations maintained a close relationship including occasional shared Sunday services. With the closure of the Deer Park United Church building in 2008, they reunited in shared worship. In 2010, the Deer Park United and Calvin Presbyterian congregations formalized their bonds into an Ecumenical Shared Ministry. Our worship services contain many common elements, as well as elements unique to the United Church of Canada and Presbyterian traditions. For example, we alternate the hymnals Voices United and The Book of Praise each week.
Both congregations are members of the Churches on the Hill (COTH) group. COTH is a collection of 9 church congregations in the Yonge & St. Clair Neighbourhood who run the COTH Food Bank, hold occasional ecumenical worship services, and collaborate on outreach projects to aid our community.
